Not all candles are created equal — and some of them really aren't very good for you.

Candlelight is deeply comforting and romantic. But before you reach for that cheap paraffin pillar, it is worth stopping to think about what you are actually burning in your home.
Beeswax candles have been used for thousands of years, and for good reason. Unlike modern alternatives made from petroleum by-products or heavily processed plant oils, beeswax is a completely natural substance produced by honeybees. That difference matters more than you might think.
Paraffin wax, the most common candle material, is a petroleum by-product. When burned, it releases a range of potentially harmful chemicals including benzene and toluene — both of which are known carcinogens. For people with asthma, allergies or chemical sensitivities, paraffin candles can be a real problem, even in a well-ventilated space.
Soy candles are often marketed as the cleaner, greener option, and while they're a step up from paraffin, they come with their own caveats. Most commercial soy wax is heavily processed and frequently blended with paraffin to improve performance. The soy crop itself is also one of the world's leading drivers of deforestation, and the majority is genetically modified. That's a lot of compromise for a supposedly natural product.
Beeswax candles, on the other hand, are considered one of the cleanest-burning options, producing almost no soot when properly maintained.
One thing worth noting: not all beeswax candles are created equal. All Little Haus candles are made using only 100% pure beeswax. However, some manufacturers blend beeswax with paraffin to cut costs while still marketing it as a "beeswax candle". A genuine beeswax candle will have a faint honey scent even when unlit and tends to have a slightly opaque, creamy look.
Switching to beeswax candles is a small change with a surprisingly meaningful impact on your indoor environment. It is one of those rare cases where the traditional option is also the healthiest one.
